Storm-Season Ready

Generator Hookup & Transfer Switch Installation in Jacksonville, FL

A generator is only as good as the way it is wired in. I install transfer switches and interlocks so your house switches over safely, without a single extension cord.

The Wiring Is the Part That Keeps You Safe

Jacksonville sits in a hurricane corridor and loses power most seasons. A generator answers that, but only if it is connected through a transfer switch or an interlock. Running cords through a window powers a few things and leaves the rest of the house dark.

Backfeeding a generator into an ordinary outlet is the dangerous shortcut people reach for. It pushes power back down the utility line toward the crews working to restore it. A transfer switch makes that physically impossible, which is why it is required and why it is inspected.

Reasons People Call Me About Generators

Extension cords through a window

The common setup, and the one that powers least and risks most

A generator with nowhere to plug in

Bought before storm season, never wired to the house

No way to run the well or HVAC

Hard-wired loads cannot be reached by a cord at all

Someone suggested backfeeding a dryer outlet

Illegal, uninspectable, and dangerous to line crews

Standby generator delivered, not connected

The electrical side is a separate trade from the delivery

Medical equipment at home

Outages stop being an inconvenience and become a real risk

What I Install

Automatic Transfer Switch

For a standby generator. The house switches over on its own when the power drops and switches back when it returns, with nobody home to do anything.

Manual Transfer Switch

For a portable generator. A dedicated sub-panel of chosen circuits you switch across by hand: fridge, well pump, a few lights, whatever matters most.

Interlock Kit

A plate on your existing panel that makes it physically impossible to have utility power and generator power on at once. Often the most economical safe option.

Generator Inlet Box

A weatherproof outdoor inlet so the generator connects with one cord and stays outside where it belongs.

How It Works

1

What You Want Running

We work out which circuits matter to you in an outage. That decides the size of everything else.

2

Generator and Panel Assessment

I look at the generator you have or plan to get and at what your panel can accommodate.

3

Permit

Transfer switch work is permitted in Jacksonville and Duval County. It is arranged with a licensed contractor who pulls it and schedules the inspection.

4

Installation

Transfer switch or interlock fitted, inlet mounted, circuits moved across and labelled clearly.

5

Test Under Load

We start the generator and watch the house transfer, so you have seen it work before you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a transfer switch for a portable generator?
If you want to power anything hard-wired, such as a well pump, HVAC or your lighting circuits, yes. A transfer switch or interlock is the only safe and legal way to connect a generator to your house wiring. Cords can only reach things you can unplug.
What is the difference between a transfer switch and an interlock kit?
A transfer switch is a separate sub-panel holding the circuits you chose, switched across by hand or automatically. An interlock is a plate fitted to your existing panel that makes it physically impossible to have both utility and generator power on at once. An interlock is usually cheaper and gives access to more circuits; a transfer switch is simpler to operate. I will tell you which suits your panel.
Why can I not just backfeed through a dryer outlet?
Because it sends power back down the utility line toward the crews working to restore it, and because nothing stops utility power returning into your running generator. It is illegal, it will not pass inspection, and it is the single most dangerous thing people do with a generator.
Do you supply the generator as well?
I do the electrical side: the transfer switch, the interlock, the inlet and the wiring, with permitting arranged through a licensed contractor. You can get the generator wherever you like, and I am happy to tell you what size suits the circuits you want running before you spend the money.
How long does a generator hookup take?
An interlock or manual transfer switch is usually a single day. An automatic transfer switch for a standby generator takes longer and depends on the unit and its location. I will give you a firm timeline at the estimate.
Do I need a permit for a generator transfer switch in Jacksonville?
Yes. Transfer switch and interlock installations are permitted work in Jacksonville and Duval County, and they are inspected. It is arranged with a licensed contractor who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection, and I do the work under that licence.
