Diagnosis and Repair

Electrical Troubleshooting & Repair in Jacksonville, FL

Half the outlets in a room stop working. A breaker trips every evening. Something smells hot. I find the actual cause instead of replacing parts until it goes quiet.

Finding the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

Electrical faults rarely show up where the problem is. A dead outlet in a bedroom is often a failed connection in a completely different room, upstream on the same circuit. Swapping the dead outlet changes nothing, because the outlet was never the fault.

Troubleshooting is the part of this trade that takes the longest to learn and cannot be guessed at. I trace the circuit, find where it actually fails, and tell you plainly whether it is a ten minute repair or a symptom of wiring that is reaching the end of its life.

Call Me When You See These

Burning smell or scorch marks

Stop using the circuit and call the same day; this one does not wait

Breaker trips repeatedly

The breaker is doing its job. Something is making it, and that something needs finding

Outlets dead in part of a room

Usually one failed connection upstream, not several failed outlets

Lights flicker or dim

Often a loose neutral, which gets worse and can damage appliances

Warm switch or outlet plate

A connection is heating up behind the wall

Buzzing from the panel

Never normal. Worth looking at before it becomes an emergency

What I Diagnose and Repair

Dead Circuits and Outlets

Tracing a circuit back to the connection that actually failed, then repairing it properly rather than bridging around it.

Repeated Breaker Trips

Distinguishing an overloaded circuit from a genuine short or ground fault, and fixing the cause rather than fitting a bigger breaker.

Flickering and Dimming Lights

Loose neutrals, failing connections and shared-circuit problems, including the kind that damage electronics over time.

Overheating and Burning Smells

Locating the connection that is heating up, and telling you honestly whether the rest of the wiring is in the same condition.

Aluminum Wiring Connections

Common in 1960s and 1970s Jacksonville homes and a frequent cause of overheating at outlets and switches.

Failed GFCI and AFCI Devices

Working out whether the device failed or is correctly reporting a real fault somewhere on the circuit.

How It Works

1

What You Are Seeing

When it happens, what is running at the time, and what changed recently. This narrows it more than any meter does.

2

Trace the Circuit

I follow the affected circuit to find where it actually fails, rather than replacing the nearest visible part.

3

Tell You What I Found

In plain terms: what failed, why, and whether it is isolated or a sign of something wider.

4

Repair

Most faults are fixed the same visit. If it needs parts or a permit, you get a price before anything else happens.

5

Check the Neighbours

One failed connection often has siblings. I check the rest of the circuit before I call it done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my breaker keep tripping?
A breaker trips because it is protecting you from something. It is usually one of three things: too much load on one circuit, a short between wires, or a ground fault. Those need different fixes, which is why the diagnosis matters. Replacing the breaker with a larger one is not a fix, it removes the protection while leaving the fault.
Half the outlets in my room stopped working. What causes that?
Almost always a single failed connection upstream on the same circuit, so everything past that point goes dead. It is frequently a back-stabbed outlet in another room, or a loose wire nut in a junction box. The dead outlets themselves are usually fine, which is why replacing them changes nothing.
Is a burning smell an emergency?
Treat it as one. Stop using that circuit, switch the breaker off if you can identify it, and call. A burning smell means a connection is hot enough to damage its own insulation, and that is the stage directly before a fire.
Why do my lights flicker when the air conditioning starts?
A slight dip when a large motor starts can be normal. Persistent flickering, or flickering that has got worse, often means a loose neutral connection, at an outlet, in the panel, or at the service. That one is worth looking at promptly because it can damage electronics and tends to deteriorate.
How much does electrical troubleshooting cost?
It depends on how long the fault takes to find, which nobody can honestly quote over the phone. I come out, diagnose it, and tell you the repair price before I do the repair. The estimate visit is free.
Do you do same-day electrical repairs in Jacksonville?
I respond the same day during business hours and fix most faults on the first visit. For anything that smells like burning or involves scorch marks, call rather than fill in the form, and say so.
