5 Signs Your Jacksonville Home Needs Rewiring
By Joel Gonzalez, Owner & Electrician
Many Jacksonville neighborhoods - Arlington, Riverside, Avondale, Mandarin - were built in the 1950s through 1970s. That means the electrical wiring in these homes is 50 to 70 years old. Here are five signs that your home's wiring may need to be replaced.
1. Two-Prong (Ungrounded) Outlets
If your home still has two-prong outlets, your wiring lacks a ground conductor. Grounding is a critical safety feature that protects against electrical shock and reduces fire risk. Modern electrical code requires grounded circuits throughout the home.
2. Frequent Breaker Trips or Blown Fuses
Circuit breakers trip to prevent overheating. If you are regularly resetting breakers or replacing fuses, your electrical system is telling you it cannot handle your current electrical load. This is common in older homes that were wired for far fewer appliances and electronics than we use today.
3. Discolored Outlets or a Burning Smell
Scorch marks around outlets or switches, warm cover plates, or a burning smell near electrical fixtures are serious warning signs. These indicate overheating at wire connections, which is a fire hazard that should be addressed immediately.
4. Aluminum or Cloth-Insulated Wiring
Homes built between 1965 and 1973 may have aluminum branch circuit wiring, which is prone to overheating at connections. Homes built before 1960 often have cloth-insulated wiring that becomes brittle with age, exposing bare conductors. Both types are considered safety risks by modern standards.
5. Your Home Is Over 40 Years Old and Has Never Been Rewired
Electrical wiring has a useful life. The insulation around wires degrades over decades of heating and cooling cycles. If your Jacksonville home was built before the mid-1980s and still has its original wiring, it is worth having an electrician inspect the system.
What to Do Next
If you recognize any of these signs, the first step is a professional inspection. A qualified electrician can assess your wiring, identify specific hazards, and give you an honest recommendation about whether a full rewire is necessary or if targeted repairs will address the issues.
